Environment Development

This piece was a general idea of how the hospital could look like. I tried to make the piece creepy and make it draw people attention down the corridor into the unknown. This piece was only rough and I didn’t focus on the amount of detail I usually would. However this worked in my advantage as the lighting is able to pull off the creepy atmosphere I was looking for.

Georgia created thumbnails of what she wanted the backgrounds to look like. These were my guide.

After discussing with Georgia I then created a colour script to go by for the other pieces.

As well as the colour script I also made a floor layout so we can understand where the character has to move within the building and which rooms he will pass on the way.

The first piece I made was a shot we had to cut. Originally our character would have found this abandoned car right before he finds the hospital with a CPR dummy inside at the wheel.

Car Development

Finished Piece

I think this piece could have been improved if it was going to be used within the animation. For example I would have needed to play with the lighting more create some more sharp angles on the car to make it feel more three dimensional.

The next design was for the morgue room.

This was my initial sketch of the room. Although I decided to change it, as the scene is supposed to freak the main character out as he is running past. This angle made it feel a lot more calm as if he is still exploring. I also found this angle generic and boring after I drew it.

Developing on the initial sketch I created this piece in which I started to colour. Nevertheless, I decided I didn’t want to continue with this piece for multiple reasons. First, the angles were not correct the doors were too far away from each other as well as the wall on the right is also incorrect. Secondly, it didn’t make sense for the piece to be this busy. The script described the main character seeing the door open to find a corpse that had been dragged out cold cabinets as he is running away. This version had too much happening for the corpse to be the main focus for the audience the I brought this up to georgia in which she tried to assist with references for angles and asked me to colour it anyway. Moreover, I started to colour the piece only for me to incorrectly colour the cold cabinets. At this point I couldn’t save it or edit it enough for me to be proud of this piece, so I changed it again.

In the end after re-doing the piece again I loved it. I think that making it more simple helped me create that sense of dread as well as makes all the focus on the open door/corpse. I created a flashlight effect as if we were the character looking in from the outside.

The security room

This next piece I have mixed feelings on. I think that it gives the atmosphere of a security room and I was asked to include a lot of monitors. However, I was ask to create and complete this piece within a day. This was ideal as I would have loved to be able to explore with different angles and items that could’ve been used within the shot.

Due to the time restraints I think I did well on this piece but it could have been better. I wish I would of been able to really push the boundaries of this room making it feel distorted almost as well as being able to mess around with the light sources.

The medical room

This room was confusing to me when creating it. I was asked to create a medical stock room specifically with a mop and bucket. When I made this room I definitely struggled a bit more with trying to draw medical equipment and lots of stacked pill bottles. But the main reason I was a bit confused was I didn’t know if I was making a stockroom or janitors closet and or if they were the same thing.

I started messing around by warping the stockroom as if someone were in shock. I then researched to find Alice in Wonderland syndrome which includes visual distortions where environment’s, objects and or people appear larger or smaller, change shape or become close or farther away.

I developed this piece further by playing with the flashlight lighting as I was asked to send the piece without lighting before.

Proof of concept initial shot

This will be used at the start of the animation. I was asked to not include any textures to the trees and to not add a background colour.
